Debbie is the founder and designer at Trout Design Co. Creative and collaborative, she brings a vibrant mix of passion and strategy to every project. She’s worked with a variety of unique brands and has infused personality and purpose into each. A background including an MA degree in Graphic Design from Iowa State University and prior agency experience led her to start Trout Design Co. in 2017. Her work often integrates custom type, an ongoing pursuit and passion of hers. Outside of design she enjoys skateboarding, grounding, and 90s fashion. Hawai'i is her favorite place on earth, and her Golden Retriever Rusty is always by her side.

Tim is the project manager at Trout Design Co., and also works with research, strategy, and creative ideation behind our projects. He is an analytical but outside-the-box thinker and brings another layer of thought and interpretation to our work. A Watson to Debbie's Holmes at Trout Design, he adds his unique perspective and background to every project we create. Working with TDC since it opened, he also teaches 6th grade math during the school year. Alongside his work here he likes playing sports, bucket hats, and Aerosmith. One time he was mistaken for Nick Jonas.

To kick things off, we’ll get on a discovery call and get to know everything about your brand. We’ll ask you some questions and talk them over to help us formulate a direction for strategy. This step gives us a chance to understand who you are, where you’re headed and what your goals are. Once we have a plan we’ll start our creative brainstorm with our discovery where we develop a strategic blueprint along with a vision and aesthetic for your brand.
Design
The Flow State
Here we take the information from our discovery, along with our strategy, and start bringing these ideas to life. We enter a creative flow state while exploring all the design possibilities until we get down to the direction that we believe communicates your brand and your value best. We’ll talk through and present the designs to you, along with mockups so you can visualize the brand fully out there in the world. Together we will refine things until it's a complete and total ...“chef's kiss."
Launch
Here's to You!
Here we add the finishing touches along with creating any additional materials needed for your official launch. We then deliver the final brand assets along with a comprehensive brand guidelines book (an owner’s manual of sorts), for you to reference so you can use the work in the best way possible. We'll open a bottle of champagne and make a toast to you and your brand. Until next time…

Pulled this one from the archives. This was a passion project rebrand I did a few years ago for Wimbledon that I never ended up sharing. With the tournament wrapping this weekend, it felt like the perfect time to share!
The whole concept centers around the grass. It’s what makes Wimbledon Wimbledon. I wanted the identity to feel fresh but still rooted in tradition—crisp lines, bold greens, playful type, and little nods to the charm of the Wimbledon atmosphere (yes, strawberries included).

Boompa 2/3: Boompa’s brand Identity includes custom type to form the logomark, along with custom illustrations, patterns, and a bold brand color palette. We created the cheetah illustration as a mascot for the brand, a symbol of the inner wild ready to come out. All these elements work together to showcase the brand’s message of authentic expression.

Boompa 1/3: Brand identity for Boompa, a lifestyle brand from pro surfer Koa Smith out of the North Shore of Hawai’i. Boompa is a creative expression of the wild inner self screaming to be let out!
Throughout the project we explored energetic visuals, a 3-D type exploration and multiple patterns for the brand, and wanted the work to feel like it was moving, and to jump out at you! Boompa’s guiding message of “Let the Wild Out!” meant every aspect of the brand needed to be confident and expressive to showcase and promote this soul and energy.

Something I typically don’t advise is using the same brand element across all applications, but in this case I fell in love with this “B” mark. I wanted to see how many different ways I could use it across different applications while still making it visually interesting and representative of the brand. Ideally you would use various design elements such as a primary logo including the name, logotypes, sub marks, additional illustrations, patterns, etc. depending on the application. This helps to fully communicate who you are along with creating a complete experience for your audience.

A few weeks ago we had to say goodbye to our sweet Rusty, who received a cancer diagnosis earlier this year. This time has been difficult personally and professionally, as he meant so much to us and had a big impact on day-to-day activities (those lunchtime walks aren’t going to take themselves!) here at TDC. He’s been an inspiration, a positive light, a distraction and a companion at home and at TDC, and he will continue to have an impact on everything we do. We love you Rusto.

I’m excited to finally share this illustration created for a client based in Hawai’i. “Choose Aloha” was the theme, and we wanted to have a Billabong meets music festival type of vibe. Brand identity work we created for Handcrafted by Heidi, a boutique brand featuring handcrafted macrame and florals. We customized the type and designed this custom “H” macrame mark to communicate the “handcrafted” aspect of the brand. We also created a welcoming color palette and rounded it out with additional brand illustrations along with signage, branded packaging tape and hang tags to up the charm!

The Original Stretchlace (featured on Shark Tank!) had their branding in place, but were looking to expand out their packaging for a new line of products. Stretchlace products help solve problems by turning every shoe into a slip-on, giving you the freedom to wear whatever shoes you like while elevating comfort, and providing ultimate ease-of-use.
The brand has a unique, signature style and Stretchlace wanted their packaging to continue to display their range of stretchy shoelaces. We created 5 custom package designs for them with hand drawn illustration and type to help display the uniqueness of each product and to showcase how valuable their products are.
